RAC CAB
HISTORY & MISSION
The Richmond AIDS Consortium (RAC) Community Advisory Board (CAB) was initially formed to advise the staff of the Community Programs for Clinical Research on AIDS (CPCRA) and the RAC unit regarding HIV-related research activities. Thus, the CAB worked and continues to work to ensure that HIV research operates in the best interests of people of all ages, genders, and cultures living with HIV in the promotion of total wellness for Persons Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). However, over the years there have been many changes including the merger of the CPCRA with ESPRIT to form the International Network for Strategic Initiatives in Global HIV Trials (INSIGHT) which RAC and CAB now fall under. Also, the CAB has evolved and also now provides HIV/AIDS management education, issue and policy education, and empowerment and advocacy training opportunities to its members. The CAB also provides educational forums, discussion roundtables, expert presentations, a live call in cable education series, and other related HIV/AIDS awareness events for the benefit of the community at large.
PURPOSE
To strengthen the element of community representation within the RAC & the
INSIGHT by having people infected with and affected by
HIV disease participate at all levels of HIV research protocol
development, design, and implementation.
QUALIFICATIONS

Must be infected with or affected by HIV (i.e. HIV+, care giver,
friend, or family, etc...)

Must have a professional attitude with strict adherence to
confidentiality.

Must be self-motivated.

Must be able to effectively work in groups and respect the views
of others.
RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Provide feedback and advice to the INSIGHT network leaders and RAC on all issues related to activities stated in the history and mission above. These suggestions need to reflect the concerns of people living with HIV who often do not have access to regular health care or medical research due to race, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion or socio-economic status.

Dedicated effort in self-education, the ability to work with
others, and the willingness to review materials pertaining to
the medical aspects of HIV.

Expected to attend and participate in approx. 1.5 hour
monthly meetings to:

Keep abreast of
INSIGHT activities.

Effectively communicate their views regarding HIV disease,
medical treatments and social issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS with
the RAC medical staff.

Offer real life input into
INSIGHT protocol design and
implementation.

Discuss social concerns regarding HIV disease, the INSIGHT, and
other relevant topics.

Maintain the confidentiality of all CAB members or else he or
she will be required to resign.
